地球環境学堂は「4月学期特別聴講学生プログラム」として、2013年度より毎年4月から9月にかけて、東南アジア諸国の大学院生を特別聴講学生として受け入れています。2019年度は、インドネシアから5名（うちボゴール農業大学(IPB) 2名、インドネシア大学(UI) 1名、バンドン工科大学(ITB) 2名）、ベトナムから2名（うちハノイ理工科大学(HUST) 1名、フエ理科大学(HUS) 1名）、タイから1名（マヒドン大学(MU)）の計8名を迎えました。
4月16日（火）に、京都大学総合研究１４号館（旧赤レンガ）2階中講義室にて特別聴講学生の研究計画発表会が実施され、8名の学生は各受け入れ研究室の指導教官や大学院生を前に、自己紹介と日本での研究計画を発表しました。特別聴講学生はそれぞれ異なった研究テーマを持ち、学堂で充実した留学生活を迎える姿勢をみせてくれました。発表会の後に親睦会が開催され、特別聴講学生が参加者の教員、留学生、日本人学生と生活や研究について交流しました。9月に実施する成果発表会では、6か月間の滞在で得た成果を発表することが予定されています。
